Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary (Ubud Monkey Forest), Bali

The Ubud Monkey Forest is renowned for its environmental programs and research facilities established for the regular studies on the health, diet, and breeding habits of the monkeys. These amusing primates can be seen eating bananas and hanging through canopies in their native environment. Several old temples with statues of nature guardians can be found in the woods.

Famous tourist attractions include Pura Prajapati, which is dedicated to village funerals, and Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal, which was constructed in the fourteenth century. Because antiquities and monuments are hidden by thick vegetation and receive little light, the area has an odd, ancient feel about it.

Photographs of banyan tree roots hanging from dreary dragon staircases are quite intriguing. A visit to Pura Beji, an old bathing temple northwest of the main location of Ubud Monkey Forest, is highly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions for Bali

Yes, the Ubud Monkey Forest is highly recommended for all ages. It’s one of Bali’s most atmospheric and scenic wildlife and spiritual attractions, offering a rare opportunity to observe monkeys in their natural habitat and explore centuries-old temples surrounded by lush jungle.

As of 2025, tickets are IDR 100,000 (adults) and IDR 80,000 (children 3–12) on weekdays, and IDR 120,000 (adults) / IDR 100,000 (children) on weekends. Indonesian citizens pay lower rates. There’s a separate parking fee for vehicles.

Allocate 1–2 hours for a relaxed visit, longer if you wish to attend a dance performance, linger at the temples, or take photos. Nature lovers and photographers may spend more time wandering the extensive grounds and watching monkey behavior.

Do not bring any food, snacks, or drinks; avoid carrying shiny objects, sunglasses, jewelry, dangling bags, plastic or paper bags, toys, or loose accessories. The monkeys are adept at grabbing and running off with such items. Keep valuables secured, use minimal gear, and supervise any belongings closely throughout your visit.

The sanctuary has been a sacred spot since the 14th century, about 700 years old, rooted in Balinese tradition and local village history. The main temples date back to around 1350 AD, making this a genuine cultural landmark and spiritual refuge of great heritage for Bali.
