Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur

One of Malaysia's most well-known historical monuments, Batu Caves is a group of limestone caverns that were formed approximately 400 million years ago. The Temuan or Besisi people, a clan of Orang Asli, used the caverns, which are located 13 km north of Kuala Lumpur, as shelter in the past. Batu Caves is well-known around the world for the Sri Subramanian Swamy Temple and the imposing Murugan Statue at the base of the cave.

The highest statue in Malaysia is the Murugan Statue at the caverns, which soars 42.7 meters and shimmers in brilliant gold. Millions of Hindus venerate the cave shrine because it is regarded as one of Lord Murugan's 10 sacred residences.

The most popular celebration here is Thaipoosam, where thousands of devoted followers fulfill their vows by taking "kavadi," drawing visitors from all over the world. Another amazing attraction at Batu Caves is the Ramayana Cave, which features colorful dioramas of the Indian epic "Ramayana." Every tourist is enthralled by the enormous statues of Kumbakarna and Lord Hanuman.

An impressive collection of Hindu statues and paintings that show Lord Murugan defeating Demon Soorapadman can be seen at the Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave at the foot of the Batu Caves. In addition to its religious significance, Batu Caves' massive limestone outcrops have made it Malaysia's top rock climbing destination, with 170 routes.
