How to reach Colombo
By Air
Colombo is served by Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), located in Katunayake, approximately 35 kilometres north of the city centre. It is Sri Lanka's primary international gateway, receiving direct flights from major cities across India (Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore), the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe via SriLankan Airlines, IndiGo, Air India, Emirates, and several other carriers.
By Train
Sri Lanka's rail network connects Colombo to several major cities across the island, making trains a popular and scenic way to travel. The Colombo Fort Railway Station is the country's main rail hub, with direct train services to Kandy (approximately 2.5 hours), Galle (about 2–3 hours), Ella (6–7 hours), Jaffna (7–8 hours), and Anuradhapura. The train journey to Kandy through the central highlands and the coastal route to Galle are particularly scenic and beloved by travellers. For airport arrivals, commuter trains also operate between Katunayake South Railway Station (near Bandaranaike International Airport) and Colombo Fort, offering a budget-friendly option.
By Road
Colombo is connected to all major Sri Lankan cities via a well-maintained national highway network. The Southern Expressway links Colombo to Galle and Matara, while the Central Expressway connects the capital to the hill country regions. Long-distance buses depart frequently from the Colombo Central Bus Stand and Bastian Mawatha Private Bus Stand. Air-conditioned luxury coaches and private intercity buses serve routes to Kandy, Galle, Nuwara Eliya, and beyond. Private car hires and tuk-tuks are widely available for shorter intercity trips.
By Sea
Colombo's port is one of the busiest in South Asia and serves as a cruise ship terminal. International cruise liners making Indian Ocean and Asia-Pacific voyages regularly dock at the Colombo Harbour, making the city an accessible stop for sea travellers. While there are no regular passenger ferry services from India to Colombo currently, the port remains a significant maritime entry point for the island.
