How to reach Ella
By Air
Ella has no airport of its own. The nearest international gateway is Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo, approximately 200 kilometres away. From the airport, travellers can reach Ella by private taxi or hired car in roughly 4 to 5 hours via the A4 or A16 highway. For travellers short on time, the most efficient approach is to fly into Colombo, spend a night in the city, and then board a morning train or hire a car to Ella the following day.
By Train
The train is by far the most celebrated way to arrive in Ella city. Ella Railway Station sits on the scenic highland rail line that connects Colombo Fort through Kandy, Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya), Haputale, and onwards to Badulla. The full journey from Colombo to Ella takes approximately 8 to 9 hours, while the Kandy to Ella leg alone takes around 6 to 7 hours and is widely regarded as one of the most breathtaking train rides in the world. The line winds through dense tea estates, over colonial-era viaducts, and past spectacular highland valleys. First-class observation car seats offer open-window panoramic views and sell out weeks in advance, booking through the Sri Lanka Railways website is strongly recommended.
By Road
Ella is well connected by road to Colombo (approximately 4.5 to 5 hours), Kandy (approximately 3.5 to 4 hours), Nuwara Eliya (about 2 hours), and Galle (approximately 3.5 hours). Intercity buses operate from Colombo's Central Bus Stand and from Kandy, though journey times can be longer due to winding highland roads. Private taxis, hired cars, and tuk-tuks are widely available and offer the flexibility to stop at viewpoints and waterfalls en route.
