Distance And Duration
The total journey from Kandy to Ella covers approximately 166 kilometers and takes about 6 to 7 hours. Despite the slow speed, the ride is anything but boring, every minute is packed with stunning landscapes and charming local scenes.
The Route
1. Kandy
The adventure begins in Sri Lanka's cultural capital. Kandy is renowned for its hallowed Temple of the Tooth and colonial charm. Nestled next to a quiet lake and surrounded by hills, it provides a peaceful start. The train leaves the crowded city and gradually approaches the lovely hill region.
2. Peradeniya
Peradeniya, just a few minutes from Kandy, is well known for its Royal Botanical Gardens. The area is abundant with bright flowers and lush foliage. Even if it is only a brief stop, the natural splendor is undeniable. The train begins to ascend gradually, providing early glimpses of the scenery.
3. Gampola
A quiet town surrounded by valleys and misty hills, Gampola adds charm to the journey. The region is dotted with coconut trees, temples and rivers. It’s where the landscape starts to feel more rural and untouched. The fresh countryside air begins to replace the city’s buzz.
4. Nawalapitiya
This town is nestled deep in the Central Province and surrounded by mountains. The train weaves through small villages, tea gardens and thick forests. It’s a great stretch for spotting locals going about their day. You’ll also start noticing the weather cooling down.
5. Hatton
Hatton is the entryway to Adam's Peak, one of Sri Lanka's most prominent pilgrimage locations. The area is covered in brilliant green tea plants on undulating hills. Tea pluckers are often seen working with baskets tied on their backs. The elevation gain becomes more obvious here.
6. Nanu Oya
This is the station nearest to the historic hill town of Nuwara Eliya. The air is fresh and chilly at this higher altitude. You will pass by famous tea estates and mountain houses. Many travelers stop here to explore "Little England."
7. Haputale
Haputale provides expansive views on both sides of the track from its ridgetop location. Particularly in the vicinity of Lipton's Seat, the scenery is genuinely cinematic. This area is dominated by tea industries, pine trees and overcast sky. There are fewer tourists and more tranquility in this quiet village.
8. Bandarawela
The quaint, peaceful village of Bandarawela is well known for its local markets and relaxed way of life. Tea gardens and food farms abound in the surrounding area. Here the ground flattens out for a moment and the weather is comfortable. Before arriving in Ella, there is a brief but endearing pause.
9. Ella
Your final destination, Ella, is a beautiful mountain town with a relaxed vibe. Surrounded by jungle covered hills and waterfalls, it’s a hub for hikers and backpackers. Famous spots like Nine Arches Bridge, Ella Rock and Ravana Falls are just minutes away. After a long but stunning journey, Ella is the perfect place to unwind.
