A visit to
Eger
A regal city located in Northern Hungary, Eger is known for its Baroque castles, historic buildings, thermal baths, and most importantly for its Hungarian red wines. This architecture dates back to the 18th century and reflects work of the Ottoman Empire. The city is flanked by the Bükk hills- northern Hungary's most inviting mountain ranges. It adds to the lands unassuming charm. Even though Eger is flocked by tourists all round the year, it is still unspoilt and rugged. You can wander the peaceful streets and gobble on small meals from the many quaint roadside cafes. It is the centre of higher learning and it also provides several opportunities for hiking and other outdoor excursions.
By Air
The nearest airport is the Debrecen International Airport with many connections from other airports in Hungary. The next best option is to fly to Budapest and drive 150 kms to the town of Eger.
By Train
There is a train every hour from Budapest to get to Eger. The Keleti station has direct trains to the town and the ones coming from either of the other towns can make you reach Füzesabony from where you can change trains or take a bus to Eger.
By Road
There are frequent buses from Budapest's Stadionok station for Eger. They run every half an hour and the duration by road is only 2 hours. Apart from that, most major cities in Hungary also provide direct bus services to Eger.
The Senator Ház Restaurant provides quality Hungarian cuisine and is set in a beautiful setting. Must-try dishes are the kohlrabi cream soup along with baguette chips, mushroom ravioli garnished with pecorino cheese and the smoked local trout.
Set at the foot of Eger Castle, this place is famous for using the raw materials from the area's best small producers. Locally sourced trout along with Bükk cheese, mushrooms, ham and homemade pastas are the best picks among all the menu items.
Tucked up in the castle, this restaurant’s upscale menu is created by the Budapest-trained chef Matyás Hegyi. It largely offers New Hungarian cuisine along with a handful of Turkish-inspired dishes.
